Abstract:These talks will describe a report that presents the findings from a public health assessment of human health and toxic exposures, and define the risks from Unconventional Natural Gas Development in residents near shale gas development.
Washington County Pennsylvania has experienced rapid expansion in Natural Gas extraction since 2006. Nearly 1000 wells with compressor stations and Cryogenic Processing plant are sited near residential areas. It is one of the most highly developed gas extraction counties in Pennsylvania. The Southwest Pennsylvania Environmental Health Project, a non-profit Organization, was established in 2010 to to respond to individual and communities' need for access to accurate, timely and trusted public health information and health services associated with natural gas extraction. EHP's team includes a nurse practitioner, physician, toxicologist, public health experts and community outreach specialists. EHP performs household assessments, measures air and water releases and evaluates all information available on the health actions of Unconventional Natural Gas Development (UNGD). EHP recommends actions that people can take to protect themselves and their families.
