New England Chapter of the Society for Risk Analysis

Co-Presidents' Notes and Notices

February 2005

We are pleased to announce that the February meeting of the New England Chapter of SRA will be a joint meeting with the Licensed Site Professional Association (LSPA) of Massachusetts. Dr. Ken Finkelstein of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will be speaking about improvement in correlation between chemistry and toxicity using 28-day sediment toxicity tests. Tom Angus will follow up with a discussion of MassDEP’s sediment toxicity testing technical update.

Our last meeting was held on January 11 th at MIT, and featured a past president and our current president-elect of the international SRA. Past President Dr. Gail Charnley of Health Risk Strategies presented an interdisciplinary view of issues related to power plants, children’s health, mercury exposure, and public policy, providing a great platform for a lively discussion of ongoing mercury research (including a preview of Michael Hutcheson’s April talk on temporal and spatial trends in mercury fish tissue levels in Massachusetts). President Elect Dr. Kimberly Thompson, visiting professor at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, presented an historical review of the first 25 years of SRA and led an excellent discussion of issues for the future of SRA.

Our annual poster session will be held on June 14 th. Please start thinking about posters that you would like to present. We would like to compile abstracts for the posters in advance of the meeting. Please send abstracts to If you cannot send an abstract prior to the meeting, please feel free to bring your poster anyway. There will be an award for best student poster, so please encourage students to attend.

Igor Linkov is in the process of planning a decision analysis workshop to be held in Boston in May. Please send any suggestions/ideas (speakers, topics to be covered, etc.) to Igor at This workshop will be organized by the Decision Analysis and Risk specialty group of SRA. INFORMS-Boston and the Decision Analysis Society co-sponsors of the workshop.

The North Atlantic Chapter of the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (NAC/SETAC) will have their annual meeting June 7-9 in Portland Maine. See for details. We are currently having discussions with NAC/SETAC about having one of our monthly meetings as a joint meeting between the two organizations.

Please remember to renew your membership. Also, please note that we are meeting at the Westin Hotel in Waltham rather than CDM on Thursday February 9, 2006.

We look forward to seeing you,

Your co-chairs: Jo Anne Shatkin and Tom Angus
